Social Media, Excessive Use, and Mental Health

About This Event

Social media use can negatively impact mental health and quality of life in a variety of ways. The platforms are designed to be addictive, increasing overuse and distress associated with attempts to limit use. Overuse and dependence on social media can negatively impact social and emotional development and increase the risk of sleep problems, eye strain, sedentary lifestyle, social isolation, and aggressive behaviors, among other poor outcomes. Social media use is not infrequently associated with unhealthy social comparison, ineffective searching for validation from online posts, and harmful interactions, including cyberbullying and encounters with online predators. Individuals are encouraged to consider the upsides and downsides of various types of social media use for themselves and any dependents they may have.

Join Dr. Nils Westfall, MD, and Megan O’Brien, LCSW, for a free virtual presentation on the impact of excessive social media and screen time on the mental health of children and adolescents.
