St. John’s Health emergency team in Jackson, WY consists of specially trained nurses, physicians, and medical specialists who remain on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This team is experienced in performing fast preliminary diagnosis and appropriate treatment for injuries, serious health conditions, and more.

St. John's Emergency Department is designated an Area Trauma Hospital by the WY Department of Health. The Area Trauma Hospital designation verifies that St. John's Health meets all requirements from Wyoming in regards to four levels of trauma care, with Area Trauma Hospital being the second highest of four possible designations.

The Wyoming Trauma Program provides designations for the state's trauma hospitals based on the services they provide as well as their commitment to continuous improvement efforts. Participation in the state trauma system also indicates the hospital's commitment to health and safety education for the community.

Recognizing an Emergency

Too many people do not receive critical medical treatment because they do not recognize the signs of an emergency. Take a few minutes to read about symptoms of a medical emergency we outline below. Keeping these facts in mind will help you act quickly in a situation where every second counts.

Symptoms of a medical emergency:

• Chest pains – Severe chest pains, tightness in the chest, or difficulty breathing are all signs of an emergency. In many cases, these indicate an issue with the heart. You may have heard that heart attacks are accompanied by tingling in the left arm. Please be aware that, while common, this is not always the case, and if you are having serious chest pains without arm tingling you should still go to the hospital.
• Sudden behavioral changes – If a close friend or loved one suddenly seems confused, disoriented, or shows radical shifts in personality, this could be an indication of an emergency. Use your best judgment to determine if their behavior is cause for concern. You should definitely visit the emergency room if the person in question recently suffered a head injury.
• Nonstop vomiting or bleeding – Both of these are normal in small doses, but chronic vomiting or nonstop bleeding is a cause for concern. If a wound has not reduced bleeding in 15 minutes, apply pressure to the area and call for an ambulance.
• Fainting – There are a surprising number of cases where people are not immediately brought to the hospital after fainting. Falling unconscious is a serious event, no matter the context. If the individual fainted once, it means they could again, and every fall comes with a risk of serious injury. Additionally, fainting could be the sign of a serious medical condition and it is important to discover what caused the event as soon as possible.
• Severe abdominal pain – Abdominal pain is a fairly common occurrence, so it can sometimes be tricky to tell if it’s an emergency or not. Often emergency cases are accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, sweating, abnormal stool, etc. Trust your own sensations—if your pain feels intense enough head to the emergency room even if there are no other conditions.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of emergency symptoms. You should also head to the ER for more obvious conditions like severe injuries, sudden slurred speech, coughing up blood, consuming poison, burn injuries, or any other condition that appears life threatening.
