Inside the OR at St. John’s Health

A closer look at the people, technology, and teamwork shaping surgical care in Jackson

The Operating Room (OR) at St. John’s Health (SJH) is more than a surgical space, it’s where innovation, precision, and compassion meet. Thanks in large part to a $1 million grant from the Friedman Family Foundation to the St. John’s Health Foundation, we’ve made significant upgrades to technology, workflow, and infrastructure. These improvements are helping our surgical team set new standards for rural healthcare. Because behind every successful procedure isn’t just advanced equipment, it’s a team dedicated to delivering exceptional care.

The People Behind the Procedures

At the center of SJH’s OR are two leaders who turned early passions into lifelong careers in surgery.

Becca Radley, Director of Surgical Services, began her journey at SJH as a CNA in long-term care. A chance conversation with a surgeon sparked her curiosity about the OR. From there, she became an Endoscopy Technician, earned her nursing degree, and later completed an MBA. For Radley, surgery brings together everything she loves: anatomy, hands-on work, and fast-paced decision-making.

Erin Turley, Manager of Surgical Services, discovered her calling during a high school work experience program in Australia. That early exposure shaped her path through nursing school with a single goal in mind: to work in the OR. For Turley, it’s not just about surgical precision—it’s the tight-knit teamwork that defines each case.

Investing in Surgical Excellence

Recent renovations have enhanced the OR environment for both patients and providers. Key updates include:

  • 4K imaging technology, offering greater visibility during laparoscopic procedures
  • Advanced lighting and airflow systems to support infection control and improve visibility
  • Modernized OR suites, supported by the SJH Foundation, designed to optimize safety and efficiency

These improvements haven’t just elevated surgical capability—they’ve also reduced troubleshooting, improved workflow, and created a better experience for staff and patients alike.

A Rural Hospital with Big-City Capabilities

Unlike many rural hospitals, SJH has the resources and autonomy to offer advanced surgical care close to home. Recent expansions include:

  • Orthopedic trauma surgeries
  • Robotic-assisted gynecologic procedures
  • Advanced urologic surgeries

“Our healthcare environment is a rare and treasured thing,” says Radley. “We’re really fortunate to have the right people in place.”

With highly trained staff, a strong safety culture, and a deep commitment to collaboration, SJH continues to elevate what’s possible in rural surgical care.

Looking Ahead

As technology advances and services grow, the future of surgical care at SJH remains focused on one thing: the patient. From routine procedures to complex operations, patients can count on skilled hands, compassionate care, and the comfort of staying close to home.
