Complimentary pain management classes begin May 8

People suffering from chronic pain have another option to help them cope: classes in pain management. St. John’s Medical Center is offering a free eight-week session of classes designed to help people learn new skills to improve their quality of life.

“You can use your brain to help manage your pain, so you don’t have to continue to suffer,” said Holly Richert, MS, neuropsychology technician and care coordinator at St. John’s Cognitive Health. “There are a multitude of ways to deal with chronic pain.”

Classes cover pain models and theories, stress management, relaxation techniques, communication skills, sleep, nutrition, medication management, pacing, and more.

“After a year and a half of tests, scans, and doctor's exams, I was diagnosed by a leading medical center with a chronic pain condition,” said Michael Minter, who was referred to a three-week class onsite at that facility. Rather than travel, Mr. Minter opted to enroll in pain management classes at St. John’s last fall. “I am now almost pain free. I highly recommend the class,” he said.

The next session of pain management classes will be held weekly on Wednesdays, May 8–June 26, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at St. John’s. For more information and to register, call 307-739-7589.
