Cerner selected as Medical Center's new electronic health record provider

Following a six-month evaluation process by a 35-member advisory committee, St. John’s Medical Center has selected Cerner as the provider for its electronic health records (EHR).

“The board agreed with the EHR advisory committee’s recommendation of Cerner for a fully integrated enterprise EHR,” said Michael Tennican, board president for St. John’s Medical Center. “This system will ultimately replace the existing medical record platforms for the hospital and outpatient physician clinics, as well as all the associated programs and infrastructure.”

The new system, the Cerner Millennium® CommunityWorks EHR, is a cloud-based IT platform that provides physicians with an integrated digital record of a patient’s health history, including clinical and financial data. Through the new online patient portal, patients will be able to securely message physicians, schedule appointments and easily access their health history.

“Integration between our hospital and ambulatory physician clinics was a key determination for us,” said Lance Spranger, chief information officer for St. John’s Medical Center. “Cerner provides that function as well as the ability to access meaningful data and analytics.”

St. John's began seeking an alternative EHR vendor when industry events called into question the hospital's ability to ensure that support from the vendor would continue to be available.

The transition to Cerner is expected to occur in the next 14-16 months.
