Hospital and Living Center earn national accolades

In newly published reports, St. John’s Medical Center and St. John’s Living Center have again been recognized for achieving the highest possible ratings by national organizations that monitor quality, safety, and patient experience.

“We are honored to be the only hospital in Wyoming to receive the coveted five stars from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the only hospital in the state to have achieved an “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group,” said St. John’s CEO Paul Beaupré, MD. “Our providers and staff work diligently to ensure we follow the best practices for patient care that result in these high marks.”

In addition, St. John’s Living Center received five stars from CMS, with five stars in each of the rating’s subcategories, making it the only long-term care center in Wyoming to achieve that distinction. The Leapfrog Group does not rate long-term care facilities.

Fewer than 10% of the more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals and 10% of the 15,000 Medicare/Medicaid-certified nursing homes nationwide earned five stars, CMS’s highest rating.

ABOUT CMS’s STAR RATING SYSTEM

CMS’s Overall Hospital Rating is calculated by taking the weighted average of group scores in seven measures: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, and efficient use of medical imaging. The latest Overall Star Ratings uses data from dates ranging from the second quarter of 2013 to the second quarter of 2017. Detailed information on hospital ratings may be found at https://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare/search.html

CMS’s Nursing Home Compare uses three sub-categories for the nursing home rating (health inspections, staffing, and quality) and draws information from thousands of data points. The health inspections rating contains information from the past three years of onsite inspections. The staffing rating has information about the number of hours of care provided on average to each resident each day by nursing staff, taking into consideration the differences in the levels of residents' care needs. The quality measure rating takes into account information on 11 different physical and clinical measures for nursing home residents.
