St. John’s Health Nationally Recognized with an ‘A’ for the Fall 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

St. John’s Health was awarded an ‘A’ in the fall 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing achievements in protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care.

“This is another indication of the outstanding care that our staff delivers each day,” said St. John’s Health CEO Paul Beaupré, MD. “We have believed for a long time that we provide care deserving of a high rating but have only recently been able to participate fully in the Leapfrog survey.”

“Our quality team has done the hard work of mining and reporting data to Leapfrog,” said Richelle Heldwein, MPH, St. John’s Health Chief Risk and Compliance Officer. “This has allowed Leapfrog to get the true picture of the quality of care that we provide at St. John’s Health.”

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Safety Grade assigns 2,600 hospitals nationwide with an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade, based on performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections, and other harms to patients.

“We are extremely grateful to hospital leadership and health care workers who have remained steadfast in prioritizing patient safety as our nation battles COVID-19,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “This ‘A’ is a testament to the care and commitment of those who work for St. John’s Health.”

Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades twice per year. In cases where a hospital's information is not available for a certain measure, Leapfrog uses a supplemental data source.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade places each measure into one of two domains, Process/Structural Measures or Outcome Measures, each accounting for 50 percent of the overall score. Process Measures represent how often a hospital gives patients recommended treatment for a given medical condition or procedure; Structural Measures represent the environment in which patients receive care; and Outcome Measures represent what happens to a patient while receiving care.
