Frequently Asked Questions

St. John's Psychiatry FAQ

What services do we provide and who do we serve?

At the clinic we have two psychiatrist - medical doctors who specializes in mental healthcare. A psychiatrist can make diagnoses, prescribe medications, monitor labs, and help with coordination of care. Psychiatrists may assess for any underlying medical conditions that can affect mental health. Nils Westfall, MD, a child and adolescent psychiatrists, has undergone specialty training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health concerns in the pediatric population. Leah Fortson, MD, completed training in adult psychiatry and treats patients over 18.

Our psychiatric team provides assessments, diagnostic formulations, and treatment plans based on a biopsychosocial model and prescribes evidence-based pharmacotherapy (medication management) for mental health concerns. We do not provide psychological testing, psychotherapy, or counseling, but frequently refer to community providers for these specific services.

For child and adolescent psychiatric needs, we accept new patients for the ages 2-20 years.

For adult psychiatric needs, we accept new patients 18 years or older.

We create and foster community by providing an intentionally welcoming and safe environment where all feel valued and cared for, and where all are given opportunity to form meaningful connections with one another. We foster a climate of purposeful inclusion of all. We cherish the diversity of gender, age, race, ethnicity, size, national origin, range of abilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, financial means, education, and political perspective.

How do I make an appointment?

Call 307-739-4818 and dial extension 1 for the front desk. If you get our answering service, you can expect a call back within a business day. New patient appointments typically book out at least a month.

Appointments are available Tuesday through Friday 8a-5:30pm.

For your first appointment, prior records should be either faxed ahead to 307-739-4866 or emailed to stjohnspsychiatry@stjohns.health at least a week before your appointment so the provider has time to review them. Please send the following:

    • Relevant lab and imaging results
  • If being referred by a medical provider:

    • Copy of 504 or IEP
    • Any testing the school has performed

If you need more urgent treatment, please contact a primary care provider, urgent care, or emergency room.

What should send the clinic before my first appointment?

Ten days before your appointment a link will be sent to your phone or email requesting information including a government issued ID (of legal guardian or if patient is 18 years old, they will need their own) and insurance card.

Must a legal guardian accompany a minor to all appointments?

Yes – patients under 18 years old are required to be accompanied by a legal guardian to all appointments and cannot see the doctor without one. Patients at least 18 years of age may choose whether or not to have family accompany them, however family involvement, especially at the first appointment, is strongly advised.

Where are you located?

The physical address is 555 East Broadway, Jackson, WY 83001. The clinic is in Suite 218.

What can I expect at the first appointment?

Expect your first visit to take up to 90 minutes for children and 60 minutes for adults. If the appointment is for your child, the doctor will interview the parent(s) and child separately. The appointment concludes with everyone meeting together to discuss the conclusions and make a care plan.

What is your policy about cancelling and rescheduling appointments?

If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, we expect you to call at least one business days before the scheduled appointment. A cancellation or reschedule within one business days is considered a no-show.

What do I do if I am running late for my first appointment?

Call 307-739-4818, extension 1. If more than 15 minutes late, you may be asked to reschedule.

What if I miss my first appointment?
