Emotional and psychological support for cancer

Cancer touches every part of life—body, mind, and spirit. At St. John’s Health, we believe true healing means caring for the whole person—and that includes the people who love and care for them. That’s why our Cancer Care team offers mental health support tailored specifically for individuals navigating the emotional and psychological challenges of cancer, and for their family members and caregivers who are deeply affected.

Whether you or your loved one is dealing with a new diagnosis, in the middle of treatment, or adjusting to survivorship, emotional stress can be overwhelming. You may experience fear, sadness, anxiety, uncertainty, or even guilt. These are common and natural responses—and you don’t have to face them alone.

Through a referral from your cancer care team, you can access specialized mental health services provided by C. Bufkin Moore, Psy. D and Matthew Shlim, MSW, PCSW. These experienced clinicians offer individualized, compassionate care to help both patients and family members cope with the psychological effects of cancer.

Support is available for a range of concerns, including:

  • Anxiety or depression related to diagnosis or treatment
  • Adjustment to lifestyle changes and loss of control
  • Family or relationship stress
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Grief, fear of recurrence, or end-of-life concerns
  • Relaxation techniques and mindfulness practices to manage stress and enhance well-being

Our providers work closely with your medical team to ensure your emotional care is integrated with your physical treatment plan. Sessions are compassionate, confidential, and designed to help you feel more supported, empowered, and understood throughout your journey.

Accessing Services

Accessing Services Mental health services are available by referral only. If you feel you or someone close to you could benefit from emotional support, please speak with your oncologist, nurse navigator, or another member of your cancer care team. They can guide you through the referral process.
